What data we collect and why
Garage submissions
When you submit a garage through our form, we collect the information you provide: garage name, postcode, address, phone number, website, email address, description, and selected vehicle/service types. This data is used solely to create the garage listing on our directory. Submissions are reviewed by our team before being published.
Email addresses submitted with garage listings are stored securely and are never displayed publicly on the site.
Recommendations
When you recommend a garage, we store a one-way cryptographic hash of your IP address (not your actual IP address) to prevent duplicate recommendations and enforce rate limits. This hash cannot be reversed to identify you. It expires automatically after 30 days.
Rate limiting
To prevent spam, we temporarily store hashed IP data when you submit garages or recommendations. This data expires automatically within 1 hour (for rate limits) or 30 days (for duplicate recommendation checks).
Cookies
VolksWorking does not set any cookies for visitors browsing the site. WordPress may set session cookies if you log into the admin area, but general visitors receive no cookies from our site.
Third-party services
Our site uses the following external services, which may receive your IP address as part of normal web requests:
- Google Fonts — to load our website typefaces (Bebas Neue and Barlow). Google’s Privacy Policy

- postcodes.io — to convert postcodes to map coordinates. Only the postcode you search for is sent; no personal data is transmitted. postcodes.io
We do not use any analytics, advertising, or tracking services.
Who has access to your data
Garage submission data is accessible only to the site administrator for the purpose of reviewing and publishing listings. We do not sell, share, or provide your data to any third parties.
Data retention
- Published garage listings are retained for as long as the site operates.
- Rate limiting data (hashed IPs) expires automatically within 1 hour to 30 days.
- No long-term personal data is stored beyond what is included in garage listings.
Your rights
If you have submitted a garage listing, you can request that we edit or remove your submission by contacting us. Under GDPR and UK data protection law, you have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you
- Request correction of inaccurate data
- Request deletion of your data
- Object to processing of your data
